Director Anthony Williams and leading lady Kathryn Toohey talk about the new Manx Operatic Society production of Chess which opens at the Gaiety Theatre on Saturday.

No Chess tournament would be possible without The Arbiter’s beady eyes over the game. Alice Quayle plays the no-nonsense referee, for whom the game is always greater than its players.

Having played Ivan Molokov in the MOS 2000 production of ‘Chess’, Phil Bird has now defected to the USA this time around to appear as the calculating capitalist, Walter de Courcey.

Sarah Elder plays Svetlana Sergievskaya – Anatoly’s estranged wife, abandoned in his quest to be champion and back to remind him of all he has left behind.

Michael Bonner is the meddling Ivan Molokov, the Head of the Russian Chess Delegation with more than a few tricks up his sleeve to ensure each match goes the Soviets’ way.

Alex Toohey is the stoic Soviet Chess player, Anatoly Sergievsky – a man determined to be the best at the game he loves, whatever the cost.

With her father captured in the 1956 uprising in Budapest, Florence Vassy – played by Kathryn Toohey – now uses Chess as her means to hurt the Soviet machine, living ever hopeful of his safe return.

Damian Kneale plays the tumultuous Freddie Trumper, the World Chess Champion with an ego and attitude to match.
